Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr (or 12th Baron) (1577-1618) was a politician and merchant who became governor of the colony of Virginia (c1609). He made his mark on the New World through the state, Native American people, bay and river of Delaware, which were all named after him.Offington Manor House was owned by the De La Warr family for around two centuries, before eventually being sold by Thomas and his father to the Alford family in 1601. It was the main residence of the 8th Baron De La Warr (1448-1525), and became home to his son and heir Thomas West, 9th Baron De La Warr (1472-1554) after being forced to give up his home at Halnaker House in Boxgrove.
