Letters from Emigrants

The Browne family letter books (1769-1912) include a number of letters from members of the General Baptist community in Horsham who emigrated to America in the late 18th century.

John Cheal founded Cheal’s Nurseries near Crawley in 1871 after previously running a grocer’s shop in the town. His nephew George Standing and his wife Deborah emigrated to the United States in 1870 and settled in Iowa. Letters from Deborah Standing describe their life as pioneer farmers.
