Responding to Cobden's correspondence relating to the Trent Affair, a diplomatic crisis between Britain and the Union states which occurred when a Union vessel intercepted the British mail ship RMS Trent and took prisoner two Confederate diplomats who were on board, James Mason and John Slidell. Sumner writes of reading Cobden's (and John Bright's) letters aloud to President Abraham Lincoln and the cabinet. Reiterating the Americans' desire to maintain peace with Britain and discussing the wider events of the Civil War. Also mentions Lord Lyons and William H Seward.
